Reflectarray with variable slots on ground plane

Mar 12, 2007 · Abstract: A phase-shifter element for printed reflectarrays with more than 4 cycles of phase delay is presented in this work. The proposed reflectarray element allows very linear phase curves and is based on the combination of two previously studied and demonstrated concepts: variable length slots on a ground plane and patches coupled through a slot to variable length lines. Design and Implementation of Reconfigurable Reflectarray Various reflectarray element designs were considered which included variable size patches, patch with variable length slot, patch with fixed slot fed by variable length stripline. After careful study and systematic evaluation, it was decided that the element – patch with variable length slot in the ground plane was best suited

Slots in Ground Planes - Henry Ott Consultants The lowest impedance signal return path is in a plane directly under the signal trace. Slots in ground planes divert the ground current flow (see figure), thereby producing a high ground impedance (Inductance) and a ground plane voltage drop that is the cause of increased emissions from the cables connected to the board. CiteSeerX — Reflectarray Antennas One major hurdle in the designing of reflectarrays is the compensation of phase difference between various elements. This paper presents reviews of various techniques for phase compensation, like using variable sizes of the patch, adding stubs of variable lengths and use of variable size slots on the ground plane. Perforated Dielectric Resonator Antenna Reflectarray - ACES ground plane instead of a planar ground plane has broadened the impedance bandwidth to 1.4 times. This paper reports a new type of reflectarray using rectangular DRA elements for linear R polarization. Perforated substrate and rectangular concave dipped ground plane are used to improve the gain bandwidth of the reflectarray. This paper

My question is, where do you draw the line between using a single plane in vs designing the ground planes?
